Father’s Dad is a few weeks a way. Let’s make something special for Dad!!! Our Dads do so many things for us so time for us to do something for them. I also want to say a special prayer for all of those\us who now have a special angel on our shoulders due to our Dad’s going sooner then they should have. I made this design so you can use parts of it too. You can use the full design, the center part with Dad or just the grill or golf elements. That’s right! This file has an option for the grill master in your life or the golfer!!!
The project I am going to show you is wood burning. However, we are going to make a gel and then apply heat to give it the wood burn effect. Check out the tutorial!!!

Video Tutorial – Wood Burning Dad Sign
Here are the steps I took to make Something Special for Dad!
Step 1 – Load your free file into your cutting software and cut out your stencil or vinyl material. Make sure you leave extra material around your image. If not you will have to use painters tape to make sure the gel doesn’t go over you edges.
Step 2 – While your vinyl is cutting take a few minutes to sand your board. This is important for your vinyl to stick well for the mask.
Step 3 – Weed your stencil mask. Remember this is a mask. So we weed out the parts we want to burn. Once you have your weeding done apply your transfer tape. User your squeegee to make sure you get air bubbles out. Now peel the backing away from the stencil and apply it to your blank. Once you have the stencil on peel away your transfer vinyl. Take your time removing it. Keep the transfer tape as close to your wood as you can. Use your fingers and really make sure your seams are pressed down good.
Step 4 – Let’s make our wood burning gel. The batch I made made quite a bit. I have not tried storing it to see how it is at a later time. However, I did make a smaller batch. Take your bowl and add ¼ cup hot water. Then add 2 tsp of Ammonium Chloride and then 4 tsp of Thickener. Use the popsicle stick to stir the mixture. Let it sit for about a minute.
Step 5 – Apply your mixture to the stencil and blank. A little goes a long way. So you want to do a thin layer of the gel on the sign. I went multiple directions to make sure i had a nice thin coat. Check out the video for this!!! Once you have the gel on let the sign sit for 30 minutes.
Step 5 – Once it’s dry after the 30 it;s time for us to burn it!!! Now, you can use a kitchen torch, butane torch or heat gun. Whatever you have. However, make sure your heat gun is hot enough!!! Trust me. Ours was not working and it did not work. So I had to go to the torch. Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area. You will have smoke and smell. Then run your heat source over your design until you receive the effect you are looking for.
Step 5 – If you want to apply a stain you can at this point. I used a baby wipe and some paint. Put paint on the baby wipe. Smeared it on my board and then I started “staining” the board. Make sure you do your edges if you are are not putting anything around them.
Now you have an awesome gift for someone special in your life!!!
